Geoffrey West spent decades at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Santa Fe Institute studying why organisms ranging from mice to whales follow the same precise mathematical scaling laws — laws that hold across 27 orders of magnitude of body mass.

His breakthrough was recognizing that these laws arise not from biology but from the mathematics of networks. Any system that transports resources through a branching network — nutrients through blood vessels, information through decision hierarchies, capital through supply chains — obeys the same equations.

The empirical validation for companies is striking. Sales scale with headcount at an exponent of 0.976. R&D expenditure scales at 1.000. Total assets scale at 0.894. These are not approximations. Power Law Scaling
Measures whether your organization grows efficiently or wastefully as size increases. The exponent b is the key signal: above 1.0 means superlinear returns, below 1.0 means you are working harder for diminishing output as you scale.

How fast the organization processes, resolves, and moves. Derived from your average resolution time across all operational events. A high metabolic rate means the organization responds quickly. A declining rate is an early warning signal.

The maximum sustainable size and health given your current resource flows and friction. Friction includes maintenance costs, administrative overhead, and regulatory compliance. When friction grows faster than metabolic rate, carrying capacity shrinks and the organization approaches its ceiling.

The Death Curve is not a prediction of failure — it is a measure of how actively the organization is renewing itself.

Health Grades

Mathematical signals, not opinions.

Each of the six equations produces a health grade — A through F — calculated directly from your operational data against West's scaling benchmarks for your industry and organization size.

Grades are not surveys. They are not self-assessments or consultant scorecards. They are the output of peer-reviewed equations applied to your actual numbers. Two organizations in identical financial health will receive different grades if their scaling trajectories differ — because the trajectory is what the equations measure.

Every grade below A generates specific, data-grounded recommendations for closing the gap. The recommendations reference your actual operational figures — not generic best practices.
